Aviation Maintenance

Aircraft mechanics and technicians are in great demand. You can sit for your exams and begin an exciting career in as little as 24 months. Projected earnings for some aircraft mechanics and technicians can exceed $100,000 annually.

Start a financially-rewarding and dynamic career as an airframe and powerplant technician (or aircraft mechanic). Upon completion of our FAA-certified program, you will be prepared to work in the aviation industry maintaining a broad spectrum of aircraft, from small planes to large-scale commercial jets.

THE PROGRAM

The FAA-approved Aviation Technology program teaches you all you need to know for the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) licensure exam, opening the door to a rewarding and dynamic career as an aircraft mechanic in the aviation industry.

The Aviation Maintenance Technology curriculum starts with aircraft familiarization, math, physics, and basic aircraft electricity before moving on to airframe and powerplant subjects such as hydraulics, landing gear, flight controls, and the teardown, inspection, buildup and testing of reciprocating and turbine engines.

Your studies can lead to an exciting, high-demand career maintaining and repairing aircraft or to other careers, including analyzing work methods and best practices, designing support systems for maintenance personnel, monitoring safety, developing and delivering training, and more.

You will have the opportunity to complete training and test for your Airframe and Powerplant licenses in just 24 months. Careers in aviation maintenance are soaring….and so are the paychecks!

Official enrollment in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program requires the following criteria be met:

  • All new and transfer students must have ASU Mid-South application materials completed and submitted, as verified by the ASU Mid-South Registrar’s Office.
  • All new and transfer students must meet admission requirements to the program (college-level placement and/or completion of developmental course requirements), as verified by the ASU Mid-South Aviation Maintenance Technology Lead Instructor.
  • All students (new, transfer, and returning) must be registered in Aviation Maintenance Technology coursework.
  • All students (new, transfer, and returning) must secure payment arrangements and/or tuition by the Registration Payment Deadline for the semester in which a student is enrolled, as noted in the Academic Calendar. Any student who has not secured payment and/or tuition by the Registration Payment Deadline will be deregistered from the course(s) and risks being moved to the bottom of the waiting list for the program, if a waiting list is in effect for the program rating area.

Program Goals

In addition to satisfying the General Education Learning Outcomes,

Certificate of Proficiency in General Aviation Maintenance Technology Program Goals
Program graduates will:

  • develop the technical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the aviation maintenance industry including a basic understanding of math, physics, and electricity as they apply to aviation maintenance, as well as an introduction to associated tools, drawings and regulations.
  • attain the required technical knowledge for successful completion of Aviation Maintenance mechanics certification, required by Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65.
  • strengthen core skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and science reasoning common to the aviation maintenance industry.

Technical Certificate in Aviation Airframe Maintenance Technology Program Goals
Program graduates will:

  • develop the technical skills expected of a beginning licensed mechanic for the repair, maintenance, inspection and overhaul of airframe, including electrical systems, sheet metal, welding, hydraulic systems, rigging and assembly, wood, fabric, and doping, and general overhaul procedures.
  • meet the required technical knowledge for an Airframe Maintenance certification, required by Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65.
  • develop core skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and science reasoning necessary for employment in the aviation maintenance industry.

Technical Certificate in Aviation Powerplant Maintenance Technology Program Goals
Program graduates will:

  • develop the technical skills expected of a beginning licensed mechanic for the repair, inspection and overhaul of aircraft powerplants, including their electrical components, propellers, ignition systems, lubrication systems, fuel systems, and exhaust systems
  • meet the required technical knowledge for a Mechanics Powerplant certification, required by Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65.
  • develop core skills in general education in reading, writing, mathematics, and science reasoning necessary for employment in the aviation maintenance industry.

Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology Program Goals
Program graduates will:

  • develop the technical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the aviation maintenance industry.
  • meet the technical knowledge requirement for mechanics certification, required by Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65.
  • develop general education in reading, writing, mathematics, and science reasoning applicable to the aviation industry.

General Education Outcomes (GEO):

GEO 1: Communicate effectively in standard, edited American English.

  • Provide content that is clearly focused and supported by the writer’s understanding of the topic.
  • Use appropriate grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax.
  • Logically organize and develop ideas in writing.
  • Provide an appropriate introduction and conclusion to verbal or written presentation.
  • Provide main points that are well developed and clear.
  • Use appropriate gestures, movement, and eye contact to give a poised and professional presentation.
  • Speak clearly and understandably using standard, edited English.

GEO 2: Solve problems using mathematical skills appropriate to the task.

  • Demonstrate ability to complete different mathematical tasks by using fundamental mathematical operations and principles.
  • Perform and apply mathematical operations efficiently and effectively.
  • Demonstrate understanding of mathematical tasks by communicating results in written form.
  • Effectively use technology to help solve mathematical problems.

GEO 3: Develop work ethic skills relevant to the students’ future academic or professional careers.

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively work in a team.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, cooperation, and organizational skills to complete all assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrate dependable character and the ability to respect others regardless of personal or cultural differences.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and the ability to appropriately handle criticism.
  • Demonstrate that consistent attendance and productivity are a priority.
  • Maintain an appropriate appearance for academic and professional settings.

GEO 4: Use common computer applications to locate, communicate, process, and store information.

  • Demonstrate basic computer and operating system skills.
  • Perform core application tasks within computer software packages, such as Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  • Use a search engine and/or electronic databases to access, navigate, and evaluate information on the Internet.
  • Communicate effectively using email and/or online discussion forums.

GEO 5:  Employ critical thinking skills to identify and solve problems in preparation for future academic and professional success.

  • Apply knowledge from course work to create solutions for detailed and complex challenges.
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire, evaluate, and apply knowledge to a specific task or project.

An admissions application is good for two years. Afterwards, a new application will need to be submitted.
Print off the signature page at the end of the application.
Sign the signature page in ink.

Official Transcripts

Official transcripts must be sealed. Do NOT open the sealed envelope.
While it is preferred that transcripts be delivered in person, transcripts may be sent via US mail, fax or electronically. All faxed transcripts will be unofficial. When sending a transcript, please allow a couple of days for the transcript to be received and processed.

If the ACT or SAT has not been taken, you may take the COMPASS test in the ASU Mid-South Testing Center. To schedule the COMPASS test, please Click Here. If the date you want to take it is unavailable, please askatutor@asumidsouth.edu.

Must provide transcripts or test scores that show placement in the particular course or study (ex. You can’t take Biology II without a transcript that shows you have taken Biology I.)

Register for classes

Registration dates for classes can be found online on the academic calendar located here:

During the priority registration period listed on the academic calendar:
New Students will go to the Enrollment Services Office located in Room 130 of the Reynolds Center. Ask for the EOC Office to receive assistance with the ASU Mid-South admission process.
Returning Students will need to see their assigned advisor or go the Dr. Barbara C. Baxter Learning Success Center in the Reynolds Center to register for classes.

During the regular registration period listed on the academic calendar:
Students will be helped at the greeting tables located in the main hallway of the Reynolds Center during registration hours.
