Workforce Training

ASU Mid-South offers Workforce Training to assist industry partners in keeping up with the constant demands of a growing and changing labor market. Workforce Training offers non-credit courses delivered by subject-matter experts that can be either be delivered on-site at the employer’s location or in any of ASU Mid-South’s state-of-the art training facilities. Customized training can be developed in technical areas such as electrical and industrial maintenance, as well as professional skills, including customer service and leadership training. Grants and grant-writing assistance are available to Arkansas employers through the Office of Skills Development.

ASU Mid-South collaborates with employers to diagnose opportunities for improvement, develop programs and solutions, and enhance organizational effectiveness. This involves all or some of the following actions:

· Conduct a needs assessment to understand the employer’s training needs.

· Formulate a training solution based on the results of the needs assessment and the recommendation of subject matter experts.

· Develop a comprehensive proposal, including training services and costs.

· Assist the employer in obtaining an Office of Skills Development Workforce Training Grant if eligible and desired.

· Assemble the resources required for training, including materials, facilities, and content experts.

· Deliver the training, manage the process, and evaluate the training experience to ensure continuous improvement and client satisfaction.

Here is a list of some of the most commonly requested customized training topics that we offer, though it is by no means comprehensive:

Technical Skills
AWS Welding
ASU Mid-South’s Welding instructors are certified through the American Welding Society, and offer training in arc welding, plasma and air carbon arc cutting, and oxyacetylene, TIG, MIG, and gas metal and flux-core arc welding. Employees can be certified in any one process, or courses can be developed to meet your organization’s custom needs.
Basic Electricity
Basic Electricity training occurs within ASU Mid-South’s Mechatronics Program, and can cover various topics, including electrical motors, motor controls, Lockout/Tagout, grounding connections, safety systems, the National Electric Code (NEC), maintenance of electrical systems and equipment, and current code changes and revisions as updated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Forklift Operation Certification
This course provides individuals with knowledge and skills needed to operate a forklift, as required by the OSHA 29 CFR Standard 1910.178 for Powered Industrial Trucks. The course provides instruction and hands-on training related to the operation of industrial forklifts, including inspection, maintenance, controls, stability, safety, and driving.
Industrial Maintenance
ASU Mid-South’s Mechatronics program is tailored to prepare individuals for a career in industrial maintenance. Whether employees need a foundational knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical drives and bearings, or just to upskill in troubleshooting industrial machinery and advanced hydraulic/pneumatic systems, we can develop training to meet your needs.
OSHA 10
OSHA 10-hour training teaches basic safety and health information to entry-level workers in construction and general industry. It is part of the OSHA Outreach Training Program, which explains serious workplace hazards, workers’ rights, employer responsibilities and how to file an OSHA complaint.
OSHA 30
This course covers the OSHA standards for the construction industry found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1926 along with other relevant policies, procedures, and safety and health principles for the construction industry. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous and most frequently cited by OSHA.
PLC Troubleshooting
ASU Mid-South’s Mechatronics offers entry to advanced-level PLC curriculum. We can train your employees on the basics of PLC programming, applications, and design, as well as the application of PLCs and the LAN to the field of industrial controls, and the application of control systems in achieving automation within a production system.
Professional Skills
7 Habits of Highly Effective People®
ASU Mid-South Director of Workforce Training & Community Education Michelle Bennett is a Facilitator of Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® and can lead your team through this proven team effectiveness operating system. Participants increase team engagement, morale, and collaboration. Teams come away with improved skills in communication and relationship building.
Excel Training
We can offer Excel training, from the most basic level and up. This can include basics such as the shortcut menus, selecting cells or ranges of cells, finding files, creating worksheets, entering texts and numbers, titles and labels, and freezing rows and columns, and can be more advanced to include formulas and functions, printing options, page formatting, and charts. Advanced Excel training including macros and PivotTables can be developed as well.
Computer Fundamentals
This training will walk individuals through the basics of operating a computer, including how to save a file, how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and now to navigate the internet. This can also include basic computer troubleshooting and computer safety.
Cultural Sensitivity
This training is intended to help participants better recognize cultural differences and improve communication techniques, and is organized into Five Parts. Part One of this course defines culture, Part Two moves into developing awareness and the cultural competence to interact with others, Part Three defines bias, Part Four identifies stereotypes, articulates their threat, and provides guidance on avoiding them, and Part Five is effective communication.
Leadership: Developing Effective Teams
It takes great leadership to build an effective team. However, building a great team is easier said than done. Leaders must develop a keen understanding of the individuals, their strengths and weaknesses, what motivates them and how they can work together to accomplish a shared goal. Participants in this workshop will learn to identify a team versus a group, how diversity impacts a team, to identify the stages of team development, how to set team expectations, and to identify types of team dysfunction.
